Teachings on the Practice of Chöd:

Tulku Orgyen Phuntsok will be giving teachings on Chouml;d starting in March of 2010.

The Chouml;d practice is extraordinarily effective in cutting through our ego and bringing us much closer to the nature of our own mind, thus taking us much faster towards attaining the Ultimate Liberation. Chouml;d removes obstacles, both short term and those hindering enlightenment. It carries incredible healing powers and accumulates merit and wisdom in a vast way. Merely making a connection to the practice brings great short-term and long-term benefit.

Tulku Orgyen was a Chouml;d practioner in his previous incarnation and was taught Chouml;d practice at a very early age, and this practice has been a very important one for Tulku in his life.

The class will begin in March, and run for five weeks on the following Thursday evenings on March 11th, 18th, 25th, and on April 1st and 8th from 7:00 to 8:30pm.

The suggested donation of $50 for the whole course will help to maintain the center and support future dharma activity in Santa Barbara.

Please register as soon as possible by sending an email to vairotsana.org@gmail.com

Vairotsana Foundation Santa Barbara is pleased to offer Dharma classes for Children!

In order to make the Buddha's teachings relevant and accessible to everyone, it is important that it be taught in a way that children and teens can understand and appreciate. To this end, VFSB will now be holding regular classes for youth, taught by long time sangha member, Aaron Joseph. Under the guidance of our lamas, Bhakha Tulku Rinpoche and Tulku Orgyen Phuntsok, Aaron will explore an important topic each week, in a kid-friendly way. Short talks will be combined with traditional buddhist stories, guided meditations, music, art activities, Q&A sessions, and basic Tibetan language instruction, to engage and excite young ones in learning and practicing the Dharma.

Classes will be held on Sundays after our regular Chenrezig practice, following a short break (approx. 11 am - 12:30 pm). Cushions, tables, and art supplies will be provided. Parents are welcome to participate in the classes, and offerings of healthy snacks and drinks for the children are most appreciated.

At first, the classes will cater to children aged about 6-12, and depending on interest, could be expanded to teens as well. Aaron asks for the honest feedback of parents and their children, in order that this new program will be of lasting benefit to our community!

There is a suggested donation of $10 per class. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. For more information, contact Aaron: 805-618-8822

Aaron Josephis an educator, parent, and a devoted student of the Dharma. He has a teaching credential in secondary level English instruction, and has taught middle school and high school in California and Thailand. The Perfection Within

Teachings based on Longchenpa's Finding Comfort and Ease in Meditation
with Tulku Orgyen Phuntsok

Teachings, Meditation & Discussion every Thursday

May 7, 14, 21, 28, June 4 & 11, 2009 (from 7- 8:30 PM)

Kunkhyen Longchenpa, (All-Knowing) is regarded as the single most important writer on the teachings of the Great Perfection or Dzogchen as well as one of the greatest compiler and commentator of the 14th century. He is credited with more than 250 works which truly embody the whole spectrum of the Buddhadharma in general and teachings of Nyingma lineage in particular.

The Text: Finding Comfort and Ease in Meditation is one of the Trilogy of Natural Freedom and is a most important work of Longchenpa. The four sections of this teaching offer a step-by-step explanation of the great methods for the practice of profound meditation.

Tulku Orgyen: At a young age Tulku Orgyen was recognized by H.H. Dudjom Rinpoche as the reincarnation of Togden Kunzang Longdrol, a highly realized Dzogchen yogi from the Powo region in Tibet. Tulku spent his early years in retreat and studied all aspects of Buddhism in Pema Kouml;d. At the age of 15, he attended Namdroling Monastery, and completed the nine-year Khenpo degree and taught Buddhist philosophy during his final three years. Since 1999, Tulku Orgyen has taught and led retreats in throughout the US. He is the resident teacher of VFSB.

We will hand out copies of the text to those who attend the teachings. As per Tulku's request, these teachings will not be recorded. Suggested Donation $50 for the series, although no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Please register for the teachings through Kristen Gibson at kristeng.sagepub (at) gmail.com

Mantra Carving in Santa Barbara led by Bhakha Rinpoche

As many of you know, carving mantras on stone is an art form integral to Tibetan culture and spiritual practice. Mounds called Dobum comprised of hundreds of artistically heaped Mantra-carved stones are a distinguishing feature of the landscape of Tibet.

It has been Bhakha Rinpoche's wish to build a Dobum in Santa Barbara for the sake of all beings -- and in particular as a memorial for his late daughter Yeshe Choden, who died in a tragic helicopter crash in Nepal in 2006. Building a Dobum in any location brings great blessings, including peace, prosperity, and especially the balancing of the elements in the immediate environment and beyond.

To join Bhakha Rinpoche in the creation of such sacred objects is a rare and precious opportunity, one we wish to share with you.

The sacred Dobum will be on a beautiful mountain top with a great ocean view in Santa Barbara.

To complete the Dobum, we must also build a concrete foundation for the sacred Mani stones to stand on. This will take place on Saturday and Sunday, March 21 and 22. We would appreciate your help, so if you can participate, please let us know at 805-899-8177.

This same weekend, Bhakha Rinpoche will be with us at VFSB Center and we will carve mantras on stones of different sizes and shapes under Rinpoche's supervision. Donations toward stones to carve, or for materials for the concrete foundation, are most welcome. Location: 1524 Anacapa St, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

In addition to our special events, we will continue to hold our usual weekly Chenrezig practice on Sunday mornings at 10 AM as well as two tsogs a month. The new practice and teaching schedule is now online.
